What To Do In A Plumbing Crisis

Unfortunately, plumbing emergencies can happen at any time.

Knowing how to navigate those first crucial moments can make a giant difference in damage and, more importantly, stress. A plumbing crisis is never pleasant, but you can make the best of a bad situation by knowing what steps to take once you notice a problem.

Waterford Development has prepared a plumbing emergency guide to help you prepare for unexpected issues. Please take note of the steps below!

How To Handle A Plumbing Emergency

Burst pipe? After taking a big, deep breath, follow these six critical steps.

  • Step 1 — Turn on all outlets to reduce the pressure while trying to find an isolator.
  • Step 2 — Locate and turn off your main incoming supply valve (if you know the location). If not, shut off the one in the street.
  • Step 3 — If you can’t locate your outside stop cock, call your service provider for its location.
  • Step 4 — If you have a cold water storage tank in the loft space, shut it off. It may be supplying the affected pipe.
  • Step 5 — If the valves don’t shut, plug over the outlets from the tank with a credit card of some sort. The outgoing flow will hold this in place.
  • Step 6 — Know that leaks in the shower and bath areas are usually related to the silicone seal around the edge. Stop the use and see if the leak subsides.
